Hay un gran deseo que tenemos las visitantes del Festival de Jerez, que NO llueva. Estaría muy bien que la organización del festival se encargara de eso (broma). Pero vaya, ¡qué cantidad de agua en Jerez! Hablando de ‘arreglar’ ¡Hay buenas noticias! Porque lo que el festival SÍ ha conseguido es que los alumnos vuelvan a cantar la canción «El festival de tus sueños, ole con ole ole». Sííí, eso es exactamente lo que queríamos escuchar y estamos muy contentas que el festival haya escuchado nuestra petición de volver a poner la canción al principio de cada espectáculo. Muchísimas gracias, ¡¡¡buena gente!!!

Volviendo a la lluvia… una vez cada ciertos años hay un festival pasado por agua… y este año fue uno de esos. ¡Y me he dejado las botas de lluvia en casa! Una decisión tonta, muy tonta. Casi todos los 11 días que estuve en Jerez, entré empapada en mi curso. Además, casi no visité ninguna terraza y tuve que bailar entre los chorros de agua que salían de los tejados. Así que el año que viene voy a Jerez con una maleta vacía y botas. Y algo de tela para bailar, por supuesto. Porque, ¿qué hace una flamenca cuando no puede sentarse en una terraza soleada? Se va de compras. No recuerdo ningún año en el festival en el que viera a tantas señoras comprando ropa en Jerez. Muchas de ellas se preguntaban cómo llevárselo todo de vuelta a casa – incluida yo, jajaja…. ¡¡¡Vi hasta gente en el Teatro Villamarta vestida con trajes totalmente nuevos!!! Comprados en Jerez, así que las tiendas hicieron un buen negocio este año.

Aparte del mal tiempo, naturalmente nos lo pasamos bien. Nos encontrábamos por la calle mientras íbamos y veníamos de nuestras clases y todos los días ‘disparamos’ la misma pregunta: «¿Qué tal tu clase?». Es muy interesante conocer las experiencias de las demás. Aprendemos de ello, aunque cada una tiene sus gustos personales respecto a los/as profesores/as. Y cada año hay quejas de alumnos que están con profesores que HABLAN mucho en los cursos. Tengo la sensación de que no a muchos/as bailaores/as les gusta esta forma de enseñar (por supuesto que a algunos sí); y aún así, cada año esas ‘irritaciones’ están ahí. Una pena. Sentimos que pagamos una clase de baile, y si en un curso se habla un 50% de teoría, no es lo que la mayoría de las cursillistas vienen a buscar. Además, no todo el mundo habla español, por lo que a veces puede ser una pérdida de tiempo, aunque sea para enseñarnos.

Sin embargo, este tipo de conversaciones entre las cursillistas nos hacen decidirnos de profes para el año siguiente. En cuanto a los espectáculos, debo admitir que el festival no ha ofrecido lo mejor este año desde mi punto de vista. Hay gente a la que le gusta el flamenco ‘moderno’, con historia detrás. A mí me gusta el flamenco puro, ni más ni menos. Tuve la suerte de que esta vez el año terminara con un verdadero ‘bang’ con el mejor espectáculo, ‘Amor y Gloria’, el de la Compañía María del Mar Moreno con artistas invitadas como las bailaoras Ana Salazar (que sorprendentemente también cantaba muy bien!), Pastora Galván y la tan divertida Rosario Toledo; también preciosa la actuación de la cantante de ópera Nancy Fabiola, que apareció entre el público. El guitarrista Javier Patino convirtió la música en un verdadero cuento de hadas!!! Los músicos hicieron magia. Podríamos haber estado sentadas otras tres horas más para contemplar este espectáculo polifacético. Así que sí, ¡¡Jerez estuvo bien otra vez!! Otra pequeña (pero gran) petición: – tan importante como la canción tradicional – ¿podrían estar los folletos de papel el año que viene? Nos encanta llevárnoslos de recuerdo y nos gusta hacer anotaciones en ellos. Sí, es el festival de nuestros sueños, y literalmente, queremos llevárnoslo a casa. ¡¡¡Nos encanta!!!

There is 1 big wish we, the Festival de Jerez visitors, have…. : NO rain! Would be so nice if the organisation of the festival could arrange that (just joking 😉 ). But oh boy, what a water in Jerez…. Talking about ‘arranging’…. There is good news! Because what the festival DID arrange, is meeting the students wish to bring back the tradional song ‘Es festival de tus sueños, ole con ole ole’!! Siiiii, that is exactly what we wanted to hear and we were sooo happy that the festival seemed to have listened to our request to play the song again at the start of each espectaculo. Muchísimas gracias, buena gente!!

Back to the rain….: once in the few years there is a very wet festival passing by….and this year, was one of those. And I left my rain boots at home. Dumb desicion, real dumb. As for almost all the 11 days I was in Jerez, I entered soaky wet in my curso. Also I nearly visit any terrace and had to dance between the hard water jets coming from the roofs. So next year the promise to myself is: I go to Jerez with an empty suite case and boots. And some dancing cloth of course. Because what does a flamenca do when she can not sit on a sunny terrace? She goes out shopping! I can not remember I was in a festival year where I saw so many ladies buying cloths in Jerez!! Many of them wondered how to take it all back home – including myself, jajaja… I saw even people in the Villamarta Teatro dressed up in fully new outfits!! Bought in Jerez – so the shops did some good business.

Apart from the bad weather, we naturally enjoyed ourselves. We met together on the streets while walking to and from our classes and then we daily fire the same question: ‘How was your class??’. It is very interesting to know about each others experiences. We learn from it, though everybody has a personal taste concerning teachers. And every year there are complaints from students who are with teachers which SPEAK a lot in the cursos. I have the feeling not many dancers like this way of teaching (of course some people do) and still every year those irritations are there. A pity. We feel we pay a dance class and if a course is taken in by a 50% theory class, it is not what most dancers come for. Also, not everyone speaks Spanish, so it might sometimes be a waist of time to talk a lot…though it is meant to teach us. Nevertheless, these type of converstations between the students, make up our minds for the next year. Which teacher to choose.

As for the espectaculos I must admit the festival was not offering me the best this year. Some people like modern performances, with a story. Not me, me I like the puro flamenco, not more not less. So I got the luck that this time the year ended for me with a true ‘bang’ with the best espectaculo…, the one of Compañia Maria del Mar Moreno with guest artists like bailaoras Ana Salazar (who surprisingly also sang very well!), Pastora Galvan and the so funny Rosario Toledo; also the beautiful opera singer Nancy Fabiola Herrara who turned up in the audience and guitar player Javier Patino who turned the music into a real fairy tale!! The musicians were like magic together, even for the view! I – and many more visitors – could have sat for another 3 more hours to watch this multifaceted spectacle. So yes, Jerez was good again!! One more tiny (but big) request though…. (as important as the traditional song): can the paper flyers pleeeeease be there next year again? We love to take it with us as a souvenir and we like to make notes on it. As yes, it’s the festival de nuestros sueños, and we literally want to take it home by some paper flyers with allll the info. We just love it!!! :))
